Rima Yamazaki, JAMES CASEBERE and Landscape with Houses

Since the mid1970s, James Casebere has been making photographs of tabletop models which he builds in his studio. The subject of his work ranges from suburban interiors to institutional structures, inspired by political events and social issues. In his photographs, these models often give the impression of reality. Each image transports viewers into ambiguous environment, evoking a sense of emotional place.

Andries Botha's sculptural forms made of found objects and natural materials serve to interrogate the natural and social order. In his questioning of natural order, Botha serves to interpret histories. His work has been exhibited extensively throughout Africa and Europe; he lives in Durban, South Africa. Ana Mendieta: Fuego De Tierra

Performance artist/sculptor Ana Mendieta used the raw materials of nature: water, mud, fire, rock, and grass. The consciousness of her politics and the poetics of her expression fill her work with an emotionally charged vision that is powerfully conveyed in this posthumous video profile. Drawing upon the raw spiritual power of Afro-Cuban religion, Mendieta used her art as a ritualistic and symbolic activity to celebrate the forces of life and the continuum of change.

Alice Aycock: An Interview

During her graduate studies at Hunter College, Alice Aycock began to forge links between personal and more inclusive subject matter and form. In her quest for contemporary monuments, Aycock wrote her Master’s thesis on U.S. highway systems. Aycock’s large environmental sculptures create intense psychological atmospheres. Although she uses primitive rites and architecture as sources, her implementation of contemporary materials removes those specific connotations.

 Auto : Body

This project on family violence, spanned two years and several sites across the country, and involved wrecked cars in sculptural installations. The cars were reconfigured by women and children who suffered violence at the hands of loved ones. Linked to each other through common experience, women from a domestic violence shelter in Pittsburgh, a family violence program at Bedford Hills prison, children from shelters in Niagara Falls and Cleveland, teenage girls in Oakland, and politicians on Staten Island all collaborated in making the cars.

The Artists: Part 1 (Belinkoff, Krusoe, Holmes, and Clark))

This video features California artists: drawer and painter Deanne Belinoff, sculptor and poet Sana Krusoe, wood relief carver and painter Palema Holmes, and New York-based video artist Shirley Clark.

The Artists: Part 1 was produced in concert with the exhibition Four Solo Exhibitions at the Long Beach Museum of Art in 1988. The artists are introduced by LBMA’s senior curator Josine Ianco-Starrels. The video presents and contrasts the diverse styles, media, and personalities of these four women artists.

The Artists: Part 2 (Dill, Walding, and Delap)

This video profiles the work and insight of California artists: sculptor, painter, and installation artist Laddie John Dill and painter and sculptor Clark Walding. It also includes a mini-documentary on Tony Delap’s The Big Wave, a public art sculpture that crosses Wilshire Boulevard in Santa Monica. 

A documentary about Holt’s public installation work Dark Star Park in Arlington, Virginia, this video is about the process of developing and building the park. It includes commentary from the architects, contractors, foremen, and engineers who worked on the project, as well as with people who frequent the park. Holt transforms a site of urban blight into an aesthetically stimulating spot that addresses environmental issues.

Claire Zeisler: Fiber Artist

Fiber artist Claire Zeisler discusses her techniques, ideas on art, and training; the conversation is inter-cut with images from her 1979 retrospective at the Art Institute of Chicago. “I... realized I cannot change my techniques too often. I would rather use techniques that I know and keep on perfecting them because I feel that in keeping on and perfecting them, I’m going to find something else to say,” Zeisler says in this interview with Rhona Hoffman.

Chris Burden

Chris Burden came into prominence in the late 1960s, but unlike many of the performance artists of his generation, Burden was interested in empirical and scientific investigations. His goal was to return the control of art making to the artist and to question the relevancy of more established art practices. In this documentary Burden talks about his hard-hitting performances in the ’70s that took a jaded art world by surprise and continues on to discuss the sculptural and installation works of the ’80s.

Charles Simonds: An Interview

Charles Simonds majored in art at the University of California at Berkeley. There he discovered an area of clay pits that had once provided the raw material for some of Manhattan's older buildings. He literally immersed himself in the subject, burying himself in a pool of wet clay to get a feel for the material. Simonds's sculptures are enchanting architectural minatures. Most are landforms with small chambers and towers; some are abstract organic shapes. Carefully built brick by tiny brick, Simonds's sculptures engage the child in everyone.

Cai Guo Qiang: An Interview

Cai Guo-Qiang is a sculptor and installation artist who was born in China and trained in stage design at the Shanghai Drama Institute. He continued his training in Tokyo, where he lived from 1986 to 1995. His conceptual and installation work blend cultures and materials (including tea and gunpowder) to address political, spiritual, and social issues. He draws heavily on his native culture by incorporating herbal medicine, serpents, dragons, and Genghis Khan into his “fleeting” and site-specific works.

Louise Bourgeois: An Interview

Louise Bourgeois has utilized wood, metal, plaster, and bronze in creating her sculptures. Among the many themes in her work are the house (or lair) and the so-called “toi-et-moi” or “you and me.” Both of these subjects derive from a self-defined problem in Bourgeois’s life, the desire to find and express a means of getting along with other people. For Bourgeois, the relationship of one person to another is all-important, and life has little meaning without it. Louise Bourgeois’s remarkable career spans both the modern and postmodern eras.

Kori Newkirk: An Interview

Kori Newkirk is currently gaining recognition for his mixed-media paintings and sculpture installations. Many of his paintings are urban landscapes in the form of beaded curtains made with plastic pony beads (typically used as hair ornaments) strung on stands of artificial braid. Newkirk also uses hair pomade to create wall paintings. Evocative in both texture and smell, this sensual material embodies cultural references that are both personal and political. His installations resonate with underlying social implications that speak to issues of self, identity, race, and urbanity.

John Torreano's Art World Wizard

Modeled after NBC’s long-running science program Watch Mr. Wizard, this tape features Torreano as Mr. Wizard instructing a skeptical boy on how to build a diamond out of pieces of wood. The boy remains unimpressed until Torreano uses a “video paintbox” to create flashy special effects. Painter John Torreano’s use of galaxy clusters as a reference for his fake jewel studded canvases and diamond-shaped sculptures suggested the nostalgic format of this video profile by MICA-TV.
