Semiconductor is UK artist duo Ruth Jarman and Joe Gerhardt. Through moving image works they explore the material nature of our world, how we experience it and how we try to create an understanding of it, questioning our place in the physical universe. They often adopt scientific tools, processes and philosophies, encouraging the artefacts, errors and nuances which are commonly inherent in these devices and technologies as a way to reflect on the presence of the human as observer.

Their unique approach has won them many awards, most notably: the 2012 inaugural Samsung Art+ Prize, Best Film at the Cutting Edge from the British Animation Awards 2008, Nature Magazine’s Scientific Merit Award 2009, and an Honorary Mention from Ars Electronica 2011, and has seen them awarded prestigious fellowships such as the Smithsonian Artists Research Fellowship 2010, Gulbenkian Galapagos Artists Fellowship 2010 and the NASA Space Sciences Fellowship 2005. HD limited editions of Magnetic Movie and Brilliant Noise are part of the permanent collections of Hirshhorn Museum Washington DC, USA and the Pompidou Centre, Paris, France. Their work has been exhibited and screened globally, including The Royal Academy London, Hirshhorn Museum Washington DC, Venice Biennale Italy, FACT Liverpool , CAC Cincinnati USA, Sundance Film Festival and Rotterdam International Film Festival.
