Ping Chong is choreographer, theater director, and installation artist. Considered a pioneer of avant-garde performance, Chong’s work incorporates many stylistic innovations including projections, sound scores, and ritualized movement. He created a trilogy constructed around historical narratives of the colonization of Asian society: Deshima investigated the history of an island near Nagasaki where early Dutch traders were confined, Chinoiserie explored Chong’s own Chinese heritage, and After Sorrow considered Vietnam’s relationships with Asian countries and the West. Interview by Peter Taub, curator, Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago.

A historical interview originally recorded in 1998.
