"These interventions – distillations of music videos, commercials and infomercials sampled from a reservoir of neglected or useless images – offer moments of resistance."

About this program:

The media-manipulation super-duo Animal Charm reappropriates and reconstructs recycled sound and images to make unique, often meditative and hilarious collage videos. Richard Bott and Jim Fetterley have worked on this collaborative project since the mid-1990s, and as the medium of video has evolved over the years, so has the experience of watching their work. Many of Animal Charm's early videos were created as live tape-mixing performances, and this method of readapting content has had a huge impact on contemporary digital and internet-based video. Turning commercial images into New Age meditations, nature documentary into one-liner jokes, and real estate advertisements into minimalist art, Animal Charm creates new meaning out of varied parts.

"Animal Charm's tapes are mind-bendingly inventive experiments in uncanny, surreal montage that defy logical analysis."

— Gavin Smith, New York Video Festival

"The two exemplary shows of 2000 that rocked my world and justified my love — make that masochism of the margin: in September, Animal Charm's wild-ass, wigged-out, red-hot live video remix of bad 80s TV; in November, the deliriously delicious (improvised?) duet between accordionist Mark Growden and the eye-popping emulsion experiments of Thad Povey's (found) Scratch Films. New wine in old bottles!"

— Craig Baldwin, Other Cinema, San Francisco Bay Guardian, Best of 2000 issue

About Animal Charm:

Animal Charm is the collaborative project of Rich Bott and Jim Fetterley, sound and media artists. Assuming a deconstructive take on propriety, Animal Charm began creating videos as an act of Electronic Civil Disobedience. Diving the dumpsters of video production companies and scrounging through countless hours of industrial, documentary, and corporate video footage, Animal Charm often edits the tapes in live mix performances. By re-editing images derived from a wide variety of sources, they scramble media codes, creating a kind of convulsive babble that disrupts conventional forms with subversive messages.

Animal Charm are inspired by a virtual community on the web that is concerned with recycled media, congenial to projects such as John Oswald's Plunderphonics, Stock Hausen and Walkman, Dummy Run, and heavy warped records.

Featured titles

Stuffing

In Animal Charm's masterful example of video montage, a monkey is mesmerized as he watches two dolphins toss a woman from snout to snout. Go cross-eyed with cross-cutting. Sometimes, in order to prevent the insidious absorption of mass media, it is necessary to apply Vaseline to your eyes and ears. Other times, you only need to watch Stuffing — it’s inside of everything.

Hot Mirror

A hyper-collage endurance test of sado-masochistic proportions, mixing an anthology of corporate video music with a feng shui video.

This title is also available on Animal Charm Videoworks: Volume 2, Hot Mirror Mix.
