For the past 20 years Alexis Smith's mixed media work has explored primal American myths: the open road, the bad/good guy/gal, the quest for romance, and the search for paradise. This portrait of the artist explores the roots of her thought and work, and was produced in conjunction with her exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art, held in November 1991.

 

About Peter Kirby

Since 1985 Peter Kirby has produced and directed over 60 works, including a series of works on contemporary artists and architects, a three hour evening for KCET on Los Angeles artists, and multi-screen media components for four major touring exhibitions organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.

In addition to these works, he has produced and directed films and multi screen installations for a variety of clients, both in the art world and the commercial, with clients as diverse as; the J. Paul Getty Museum; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Newport Harbor Museum of Art; Lannan Foundation; The Whitney Museum of American Art and The National Portrait Gallery, Universal Studio Tours, Florida and The Mirage Hotel, Las Vegas.

He has received a Western States Regional Media Arts Fellowship and awards for commercial work from the International Film and TV Festival of New York, the Houston International Film Festival and was nominated for a Los Angeles area Emmy.

His works have been shown in festivals and museums around the world.
