  • Consuming Passions: The Video Art of Ximena Cuevas -- Steve Seid

“Throughout each piece Cuevas displays her trademark irreverent humor, her biting social commentary, and of course, her grand and often flamboyant visual style.”

— Jim Mendiola SFB Guardian, 2000

“Ximena Cuevas is Mexico’s video artist extraordinaire: half magician, half mermaid, master of all she surveys. Cuevas looks upon her beloved metropolis of Mexico City with an eye both jaundiced and passionate. At the same time, she has turned her camera back on her own daily life and charted the quotidian pleasures and crises found therein. Her camera is expressive and inventive, her editing style jaunty and edgy, her musical taste unerring. Whether her subject is lesbian romance or heterosexual machismo, you couldn’t ask for a better guide.”

— B. Ruby Rich San Francisco, 1998

Medias Mentiras (Half-Lies)

Ximena Cuevas
1995 | 00:36:05 | Mexico | Spanish | Color | Mono | 4:3 | Video

DESCRIPTION

A video poem about the nature of social relations and mass media, Half Lies exposes the seemingly innocuous ways we distort truth. Harmonious families, trade treaties, and current events are among the mediated realities that Cuevas interrogates. Half Lies makes the viewer question the half truths we encounter daily. The video walks the haunting gray area between documentary and drama, creating a world that is both shockingly grotesque and startingly authentic. Using mass-mediated images, animation, image manipulation, and fantasy, Medias Mentiras interprets the chaotic landscape of politics, urban chaos and everyday existence.

In Spanish with English subtitles.

DESCRIPTION

"The life of objects intrigues me. Apparently inanimate, they adopt the souls, actions and lifestyles of their keepers. Here, a bed testifies to what goes on behind the closed door of a decent family's bedroom."

After working in solitude at the studio, the artist leaves, uncomfortable with the idea of having to put on a face for the art world, where they expect you to say something articulate in order to grab the curator's attention.

"You don't have to go to Hawaii to be in Hawaii. Nor do you have to be sensual to feel sensual. You look the way you are supposed to look. The sensuality of Hawaii completely fascinates me in this video."

Erase the 1940s. The desire to better appearances. To try to record a love story. It's in this way that a facial can become the biggest remaining pleasure.

1999 | 00:03:00 | Mexico, United States | Spanish | Color | | 4:3 | Super 8 film

DESCRIPTION

This is a video of musical terror where I superficially — this is the beginning of a larger project —l look at one of the Mexican phenomena that horrifies me the most: internalized racism, being ashamed of one's own roots. The fantasy of waking up white.

El Diablo en la Piel (Devil in the Flesh)

Ximena Cuevas
1998 | 00:05:07 | Mexico | None | Color | Stereo | 4:3 | Video

DESCRIPTION

"The palms of Lana Turner's hands were full of scars; the technique she used in order to achieve melodrama was to tighten her fists, digging her fingernails into them until she began to cry. Day after day, soap opera actresses smear Vick's Vaporub into their eyes in order to cry. The effect of these false tears are the tears of the public. In Devil in the Flesh we see the camera's tricks, and even so the action seems dramatic. This piece once again exemplifies my fascination with the artificial: the fabricated emotions; the Christian looking for pain in order to live out Passion; the discomfort of the everyday melodrama; the emptiness that defeats everything. So, as in all my work, I am obsessed with lying's various disguises. It doesn't interest me to watch that which is not hidden. Formally, my camera documents—looking directly without shame. The possibility of the narrative levels intrigues me in the montage. My camera work is cinema verite, and my montage work cinema mentira. My intent is an emotionally borderless language.

In Devil in the Flesh, I look at myself in the mirror, but through the desolate hole of a mask, the circle is broken by the sharp biting angle of a telephone that keeps ringing. I take up the spoon again. There is no form of escape from everyday boredom. Every grammatical punctuation constitutes a search for a break in reality or an intensified state."

DESCRIPTION

Cuerpos de Papel is a dense visual meditation on sexuality, loss, jealousy and intimacy. It uses rich sensual images to weave a digital portrait of an intimate, erotic, and emotional past. As the images transform, we are left with a slippery sense of intangibility and delicacy.

Colchones Individuales (Single Beds) Volume 1: Desolacion

Ximena Cuevas
2002 | 00:18:02 | Mexico | Spanish | B&W and Color | Stereo | 4:3 | Video

DESCRIPTION

"Emptiness: I just watched your latest video, Colchones Individuales (Single Beds), Volume 1: Desolacion, and I wanted to write you about it. Oddly, Single Beds sums up much of what I have been thinking lately. In these times of speed, where everything is propelled forward at an incredibly spiraling rate, it is only in moments of pause, of inertia, that we examine what is occurring to us. Your piece, Single Beds, performs an arrested time, a succinct suspension of time. (It is in many ways a companion piece to an earlier video of yours Staying Alive). These dreams of decay--like looking at the mildew in the trash can, the slow dance in the pool between the woman and the golden retriever dog, a woman unraveling hospital tape with the words isolation from round her head while in a bedroom, alone at night, with a single bed--these images are loaded, and point to certain anxieties that exist within our lives. With their slow motion, these segments in Single Beds represent the moments of hesitation, the doubts, the questions asked, and are authentic means to examining our current reality."

Ximena Cuevas
2002 | 00:05:00 | Mexico | Spanish | Color | Stereo | 4:3 | Video

DESCRIPTION

Turistas deals with the letdown of a world that is pre-mediated and post-digested—a video travelling guide that updates the 19th century artist's Grand Tour and downgrades it to 21st century not-so-Grand status.

Ximena Cuevas
2003 | 00:22:18 | Mexico | Spanish | B&W and Color | Stereo | 4:3 | Video

DESCRIPTION

"Perhaps Cuevas' most chilling work, Cinepolis forecasts an image-driven invasion of everyday life, picture-perfect and unnoticed. This alien intrusion comes in the form of a fully branded consumerscape that cheerily foists fast food along with the fantasy. Irreverent and biting, Cuevas fights back with the only weapon available--images of the enemy, and the enemy’s images."

— Steve Seid, Pacific Film Archive, 2004
