made for an exhibition at the Inova gallery in Milwaukee Wisconsin in 2001, THE END OF THE WORLD is an intimate and emotional study of the photographic image. the photograph and the image as two potentially separate entities asserting quite different foci.

i filmed each image for an hour in disparate sonic spaces trying to move with the sounds across the images––allow the sounds to compel my looking, an aleatory choreography. The looking moves towards and away from the content of the photograph. Sometimes the light and texture of the physical object 'the photograph' obscure the image, create a new image or subvert the original moment entirely. after this long meditative looking/listening exercise i edited the sessions to move narratively along a timeline (an admittedly elusive narrative) further upsetting the original intent of the images through new conceptual neighbors and sequential implications.

my long and continued engagement with filming/recording found photographs (from the archives of sidewalk piles and junk shops) is here given expansive latitude for simply looking which throws the contemplation right back onto the power of a photograph. a photograph being a thing, the thing which is being viewed and a metaphysical arrow pointing to an event, an occurrence or moment in the past....so endlessly fascinating to me.
